Salvation Army Kettle Campaign kicked off

The first red Kettle Campaign began 1891. The Salvation Army captain in San Francisco decided to pay for a free Christmas dinner; he placed a kettle in Oakland square and soon obtained the funds needed. The local Portsmouth Salvation Army branch adopted the Kettle Campaign tradition in1894.


“The Kettle Campaign is a way for people to help their community by giving both time and money,” Sean Boldman, the owner of American Family Insurance and a Salvation Army volunteer, said. “Take this opportunity and come help this holiday season. Ring some bells, and make a difference.”


Locally, The Salvation Army does much to help the citizens in Scioto County. In one year, there were: 65,000 meals served–27,000 of which were hot meals and 38,000 of which were food pantry meals. There were 2,800 families helped. The Salvation Army also gave away 35,000 articles of clothing.


In addition, there are multiple character building programs for the children of Scioto County offered throughout the year. The Salvation Army also hosts a basketball league that allows community members to come together and connect. In order to support these activities, The Salvation Army employees and volunteers work hard to raise funds.


“It is important for people to remember that every little bit counts. It all goes a long way to making a difference in people’s lives” and “in our community,” Mark Ferreira, the local corps officer and a seventh generation Salvation Army soldier, said.
