World class entertainment comes to the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts

July 28, 2013

Shawnee State University’s Vern Riffe Center for the Arts along with the Southern Ohio Performing Arts Association announce the upcoming 2013-14 season with tickets available beginning Monday, July 29.

The season opens with Cordis, a chamber-rock ensemble on Monday, Sept. 30. The chamber side of this ensemble is built upon cello, concert cimbalom (hammered dulcimer), and piano. The rock side is built upon percussion and one-of-a-kind creations such as the electric mbira, melodica, and the world’s longest playing cylinder-driven music box.

Following Cordis, is the Columbus Jazz Orchestra on Monday, Oct. 21, considered one of the world’s finest jazz orchestras presenting big band jazz. On Wednesday, Nov. 13, Mamma Mia, the “feel-good” musical, takes over the Vern Riffe stage with a sweet story about a young bride-to-be searching for her long lost father.

Ending 2013 is the endearing story of “A Christmas Carol” on Tuesday, Dec. 3. The classic tale features a cast of 24 and some favorite renditions of holiday music. It is a real treat for the whole family to enjoy.

On Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, the rock musical “Rock of Ages” takes the stage featuring a raucous mix of 28 eyebrow-scorching tunes by a live band onstage. Set in Hollywood’s infamous Sunset Strip, this rock musical takes you back to when it was all about big chords, big dreams, and big hair.

The heart-warming story of Helen Keller and teacher Annie Sullivan is scheduled on Tuesday, March 25. Produced through the Montana Repertory Theatre, this remarkable play comes to the Vern Riffe stage by the same group that performed “To Kill a Mocking Bird.”

When Jenny Lin steps onto the stage on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, she will captivate the audience with her piano concert. She is acclaimed for her remarkable “technical command” and “a gift for melodic flow” by the New York Times.

Topping off the season is the show that changed musical theatre forever in 1957, “West Side Story” on Monday, April 21, 2014. The musical continues to thrill audiences today.

“West Side Story remains Broadway’s best dance-driven musical. Five decades have not dimmed the extraordinary choreography or the score that pulsates throughout,” The Associated Press.
