In a effort to keep area residents motivated and moving all year long Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) along several community partners have developed a 5k Race Cup Series, involving six local 5k races over the span of 2014.
“It’s my goal to try to keep people moving not only in the beginning of the year when new years resolutions are made, but try to keep health and wellness a lifelong commitment,” said Wendi Waugh, Director of Cancer Services, Community Health and Wellness at SOMC. “With that in mind, we got to thinking about these races and how can we encourage people to not just get out there and do one 5k, but continuously plan, run and prepare for several 5ks throughout the year.”
There are six area 5k races included in the series, the Community Action Organization (CAO) Shamrock Shuffle on March 15, the Shawnee State University Spring Bear Run on April 16, the SOMC Run For Your Life race on August 30, the Shawnee State University Fall Bear Run on September 17, The Counseling Center’s Natural High Race on October 4 and the Red Cross Jingle Bell Jog on December 6.
According to promotional material for the event, “for each race in the series the top 10 males and top 10 females will be awarded points, first place in each category will receive 100 points, second place 90 points, third place 80 points and so on. At the end of the race series the male and female participant will be awarded a grand prize.”
Top prize for the series for both male and females is $100, second $75 and third $50.
“We hope this will build enthusiasm for people to participate in multiple races throughout the year,” Waugh said.
Waugh said a leader board will be maintained throughout the series at www.somc.org/life/specialevents.
