Life Point Church is set to launch on Sunday, January 26, one of the unique aspects of the church is that it’s being held inside the Portsmouth Cinema.
“We’re launching a new church in the Portsmouth Cinema called Life Point Church,” said Darrell Nickles, Pastor of Life Point Church. “I’m a native of Portsmouth, was born and raised here and moved to Chicago about 20 years ago and was there 19 years. I came back here (Portsmouth) to start a new church.”
When asked why he want to start a church in Portsmouth, “my wife and I felt a clear direction from God to come back here and do this. It’s a long story with lots of interesting turns along the way, but it was a God thing,” Nickles said.
According to www.lifepointportsmouth.com the mission of the church has three components, “Connect those far from God with Him by demonstrating our love through community outreaches and Life Groups. By creating high energy, high impact God-centered weekend encounter services where everyone will fell welcomed and loved as they experience God’s presence in a genuine, life-changing way.
Grow those who have a relationship with Christ and help them in their journey to become a fully devoted disciple of Christ. Our goal is each member will not only be a disciple but will also actively make disciples of others. We believe the discipleship process is most effective in one-on-one relationships and small groups. We will be passionate about our Life Groups.
Serving our community like Jesus would is the only hope for true transformation. We will passionately focus outside of our church body to meet the needs of a region struggling with poverty and hopelessness. We will seek out the least and give them our best.”
Nickles said for the launch the church he has gathered a team of about 60 people.
“That launch team is helping us put together a kid’s ministry production, guest services and a number of other things,” Nickles said.
He said Life Point Church will have a different atmosphere because it will be housed within the Portsmouth Cinema.
“We feel that some people may not like going to a church or does not want to go into a church, everyone goes and watches a movie,” Nickles said.
He said the church is casual dress and free coffee will be provided.
“The first service will be January 26 at 10 a.m. and every Sunday after that,” Nickles said.
When asked what people can expect from the services Nickles said, “we will have a great kids environment from ages birth - fifth grade called kids point. Jordan Nickles, will be heading up this program. I know the first eight weeks is going to involve pirates and who knows what he’ll do after that.
It’s going to be a very causal atmosphere. In the front of the theater we’ll have a live band with the words to the contemporary music on the screen,” Nickles said. “The services will last about an hour and ten minutes with the teaching about 20 - 30 minutes. The teaching will be very Biblical and is designed for all levels. It’s going to resonate with the new believer, the unbeliever and well as the seasoned believer,” Nickles said.
He said as a promotional effort to launch the church every home in Scioto County will receive through the mail an oversized postcard with information about the church.
“There are lots of great churches in Portsmouth and we’re not here to compete with anyone. We feel like we’re here to reach people that are far from God,” Nickles said.
