The University of Rio Grande RedStorm men's soccer team, ranked No. 2 in the NAIA Pre-season poll, opened the 2009 campaign with a loss. The RedStorm lost 1-0 at St. Xavier (IL) on Friday Night.

Rio Grande (0-1) had 22 shots and 13 shots on goal, but could not find the back of the net. St. Xavier (1-1) goalkeeper Ian Pickett was the star of the game as he recorded 13 saves on the night.  

Al Palar scored the lone goal of the game off a free kick in the 17 minute and St. X made it hold up. 

Rio sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Lower (South Webster, OH) performed well despite the loss. He stopped five shots.
