PORTSMOUTH — The 8th Annual Celebrity Chef Dinner and Silent Auction is Tuesday, March 1st at the Friends Community Center, with doors opening at 6 p.m.

This exciting event, sponsored by The Counseling Center, is a fundraiser for the Summer Outreach Club, now in its 27th year.

The Summer Outreach Club, a part of prevention and outreach services, is a 9-week summer day camp program that is free to children ages 5-12 in Scioto County and beyond.

The camp offers free breakfast and lunch, motivational, educational and recreational activities in a hands-on learning environment, all while partnering with multiple community agencies and volunteers within the area who graciously teach classes, mentor and support the over 120 kids each day.

Every year the success of the event is due to the participants that partner with Celebrity Chef Committee planners to make this event a huge success for area kids who attend the program.

From now until March 1st, this year’s chefs will be featured discussing their love of cooking and the dish they will be preparing. This event would not be possible with these talented, philanthropic, community stars who often give of their time and talents to support positive community initiatives.

This week’s features are Pastor Sam and Joyce Peters, Dr. Debra Lewis and Leigh Anne Smith.

3. WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST COOKING MEMORY?

There are so many great food stories in my life. It all began when I was 14 years old and after watching Graham Kerr on TV I wanted to make dinner for the family. After cooking it I was hooked on creating great dishes the rest of my life.

On another occasion I was asked by one of the teens in my youth group to cook a prom dinner for him and his date. It was a five course progressive meal spread out over the county ending up with an me in a tuxedo preparing an outdoor entrée of steak au poivre served beside a pond by candlelight with a flambéed dessert. It was great making it such a special evening for the two of them.

4. HOW LONG HAVE YOUR LIVED/WORKED IN THE COMMUNITY?

I grew up here and graduated from Portsmouth East High in 1976. I moved away for a number of years living in Largo, FL and Denver, CO before returning in1999.

5. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FOOD

I have an eclectic taste for food. I like the exotic as well as comfort foods. If I’m eating out and I have the choice between a high end steak and chop house or a top of the line Japanese Sushi Bar, I toss a coin and end up going to both of them. I like every type of cuisine and love trying new dishes.

6. WHAT OR WHO INSPIRES YOU TO DO GOOD, AND WHY?

Without being too preachy, I am moved to do good out love and faith in Christ. Every aspect of life is a gift from God. We are merely stewards of the gifts we are given. Our time, talent, possessions, and money are all given to us by God’s grace and mercy. My responsibility is to be a faithful steward of those gifts.

7. WHY DID YOU WANT TO BE A PART OF THE CELEBRITY CHEF DINNER?

I was thrilled to finally be asked. It is something I have wanted to do for some time. As a person that believes we were meant to be in community with one another, I think one of the best ways for us to connect to one another is around good food. Dining with others breaks down barriers and builds relationships. We truly believe that we can make the world a little better by doing all we can with all the gifts we have to make every dining experience great.

8. DO YOU KNOW WHAT APPETIZER YOU WILL BE MAKING AND IF SO, WHAT IS IT?

With the Cowboy theme I was inspired to make my Biscuit Bacon Bombs. It is a chunk of Pepper Jack Cheese enclosed inside a Southern style made from scratch biscuit dough, wrapped in apple smoked bacon and deep fried to crispy gooey deliciousness.
