Each year the Friends of Scioto Brush Creek, Inc. recognize an individual, family or local business that supports the group’s mission to protect Scioto Brush Creek through education, awareness and involvement of local residents. During the FoSBC’s annual meeting Shannon Browning was the recipient of the 2015 Best Friend Award.

Shannon, a freshman at Northwest High School, lives in the watershed with her parents Tim and Lisa Browning. As a 6th grade student at Northwest Middle School Shannon participated in the FoSBC’s Scioto Brush Creek Day event held at the Otway Covered Bridge. She returned to volunteer at the 2014 and 2015 SBC Day events. Using her experience and knowledge of the watershed Shannon assisted the younger students with collecting and identifying the macroinvertebrates living in the stream in order to determine the water quality of Scioto Brush Creek. Shannon has also participated in the FoSBC’s adopt-a-highway and Scioto Brush Creek Sweep. Removal of litter from the watershed and local community are the goals of these two programs. Shannon shared her knowledge of the watershed and its wildlife with visitors at the FoSBC’s educational display at the Rarden Whitetail Deer Festival. She continued to learn more about the watershed she lives in through attending vernal pool and beaver ecology programs at the GE Aviation Peebles Test Site.

Shannon is the epitome of a local resident becoming mindful of the uniqueness of the Scioto Brush Creek watershed and its inhabitants and taking action to secure its future protection. The Friends of Scioto Brush Creek, Inc. are proud to call Shannon Browning and her family members and supporters of its mission.
