On Tuesday the Scioto County Board of Developmental Disabilities (Board of DD) held an awards banquet, Tuesday night to honor its Special Olympics Athletes and volunteers.

During the event nearly 80 athletes were honored for their participation in the program. Each of the athletes was presented with an award.

Athletes within the program compete in a variety of sports including, volleyball, basketball, bowling, track and field among other sports.

The national Special Olympics Torch relay was in Portsmouth Tuesday night; officials with the torch run visited the banquet and allowed participants the opportunity to take pictures with it.

The torch is being passed along the country and will light the torch at the start of the Special Olympics World Games in California later this year.

“Thanks to all of the volunteers, families, athletes and everyone that makes our program such a wonderful program,” said Julie Monroe, Superintendent of the Scioto County Board of DD. “This is a program that reaches out to people with developmental disabilities to include them in the community, because that’s what it’s all about.”

Monroe told those in attendance of her commitment to the program.

“You have my commitment, we will always support Special Olympics here at Scioto County DD, like we always have,” Monroe said. “I think this is a great program and adds meaning to people’s lives and that’s our mission.”
