Shawnee State University creates Bear Necessities Pantry

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The Office of Student Life at Shawnee State University is pleased to introduce the Bear Necessities Pantry available to all SSU students.

Opening this August, the pantry’s mission is to serve students who are experiencing financial trouble that may lead to food insecurity or hunger. The pantry will also provide basic personal care items as well as basic school supplies. Any SSU student is eligible to receive any goods from the pantry by visiting the Bear Necessities Pantry in Room 201 in the Morris University Center. Students must present a valid SSU ID.

The Bear Necessities Pantry will operate solely on donations and is currently accepting non-perishable goods as well as monetary donations. Monetary donations in the form of checks need to be made payable to Shawnee State University, with Bear Necessities Pantry written in the memo line. All donations can be dropped off to the Office of Student Life, Room 201, Morris University Center, from Mon. to Fri., 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Bear Necessities Pantry suggested donation list is:

Food: boxed cereals, oatmeal, fruit snacks, fruit cups, canned fruits or vegetables, canned tuna, macaroni and cheese, pop tarts, instant rice, granola bars and crackers.

Toiletries: tooth brush, toothpaste, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, bath soap, shampoo and conditioner, lotion and toilet paper.

School supplies: notebooks, loose leaf paper, note cards, post-its, pens, pencils, hi-lighters, folders and binders.

“The goal is to ensure our students have the basic necessities without worrying about which to go without because they can’t afford it after tuition. We’ve all been there at some point in our college career where we ate nothing but Ramen noodles to save on money,” said Tiffany Hartman, Director of Student Life at SSU. “I just want our students to have another option to turn to when they are experiencing hard times.”
