The Valley Alumni Association held their annual banquet on the evening of Saturday, June 27, 2015 at the American Legion Post on Court Street in Portsmouth. Graduates representing nine decades from the 1930’s to the present were in attendance. Steve Mowrey, class of 1971 served as master of ceremonies. Chris Spencer, class of 1999, catered the dinner. Special recognition was given to the class of 1965 on the occasion of their fiftieth anniversary. Following the diner, music was provided by Doc Roc and The Remedies.
The Scholarship Committee was pleased to introduce their recipients for this year. David Adkins, member of the class of 1980 and Scholarship Committee Chair, introduced the recipients who will each receive a two thousand dollar scholarship to further their education. Madison Osborne is the daughter of Sherry Foster and Mark Osborne of Lucasville. Madison has begun her studies to become a registered nurse through the post-secondary program at Shawnee State University. Catherine McCrory is the daughter of Carl and Terry McCrory of Lucasville. She plans to attend Shawnee State University this fall and major in nursing. Madison and Catherine were unable to attend due to prior commitments, but did express their appreciation for the assistance in furthering their education. Chelsea Hettinger is the daughter of Charlie and Melissa Hettinger of Lucasville. She will be attending Shawnee State University and major in art education. James Detty is the son of Jim and Vicky Detty of Lucasville. He will attend Ohio University this fall. Jordyn Baker is the daughter of Christi Baker of West Portsmouth. She will be attending Shawnee State University and majoring in biomedical.
The Scholarship Committee was also pleased to present the two recipients of the Charles “Bud” Stambaugh academic scholarships. Connie, Bud’s widow, is honoring his memory by presenting each of the two recipients with a one thousand dollar scholarship. Bud was a graduate of Valley High School and a long time member of the Lucasville community and is missed by his family and friends. The recipients of these awards were Alexus Aldridge and Benji Justice. Alexus is the daughter of Steve and Tanya Aldridge of Lucasville. She plans to attend the Florida Institute of Technology and major in marine biology. Benji is the son of Brad and Tracy Uhl of Lucasville. He will be attending Ohio State University and major in engineering.
The scholarship program is funded by the generous support of many donors throughout the year as well as the profit from the banquet. Contributions were recognized that had been given in memory of Judy Lemaster Cannato, Gary Howard, and John Howard. Contributions from Alcie Barker and Richard Burke were also recognized and over one thousand five hundred dollars was received from banquet attendees.
The Alumni Association holds their banquet each year the last Saturday in June. Reservation forms for the 2016 Banquet will be available through the alumni section of the Valley Local Schools website at www.valleyls.org. Contributions to the scholarship fund in honor or in memory of someone are always welcome throughout the year.
