Incorporated in 1985, The Animal Welfare League is devoted to helping owners to improve the lives of their pets.
We provide reduced spay/neuter services to low and fixed income households, with a total of 94 in 2013. Promoting Spay Day, which is held the last Tuesday of February each year, is another function of The League. This year Shawnee Animal Clinic, Wheelersburg Animal Clinic and Scioto Trail Animal Clinic plan to participate.
Our yearly vaccination clinics are held in May and June throughout the county in various locations and are open to everyone regardless of income. These clinics offer vaccinations and heartworm testing at reduced fees.
Many pet owners look forward to our annual Pet Photos with Santa held in conjunction with Portsmouth Feed and Supply and the Blessing of the Animals held in conjunction with several Catholic churches each year, taking place at Holy Trinity Hall in remembrance of the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals.
Members help the Scioto County Dog Pound in various capacities. For a fee of $72, dogs are spayed or neutered and receive a dog tag. To find pets available for adoption at the pound, check at www.petfinder.com.
The League operates solely on donations and membership fees ($7.00) and from participating in the Kroger Rewards Program. All donations are tax deductible.
Our trustees are Linda Howell, Chairperson; Amber Davis, Vice Chairperson; Jackie Servidea, Secretary; and Judy Cooper, Treasurer. Meetings are held monthly at The Portsmouth Public Library. Contact The League at (740)858-2446 to join, offer a donation or to volunteer your services.
While The League has no authority to rescue animals or resources to shelter them, below are some organizations that can hopefully offer assistance.
