Just imagine downtown Portsmouth with each building beautifully restored, filled with successful businesses, and overflowing with people. In 2013, that was the exact scene happening in the downtown area. Over a 12 month period, 9 new businesses opened and 1 business expanded, downtown was flourishing and people were shopping. Main Street Portsmouth completed 39 downtown promotional events, 5 of those were brand new events. Of the 39 promotional events our Farmer’s Market is the longest running event that brings hundreds of diverse people into the downtown area every Saturday morning. Thanks to our sponsors Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) and Port City Café & Pub, every Saturday morning the Roy Rogers Esplanade was able to offer many health screenings, fitness workouts, live music and performances, and fresh brewed coffee! Along with the promotional events, Main Street Portsmouth awarded $25,000 to five (5) Building Improvement Grant recipients within the Main Street Portsmouth District. Main Street Portsmouth also takes pride in beautifying the downtown and Boneyfiddle areas. The Design Committee plants, maintains and waters flowers at Alexandria Park, Roy Rogers Esplanade, Market Street, the planters in front of the City building, the 4th Street and 7th Street Municipal Parking lots, and the area in front of the flood wall murals. It’s safe to say here at Main Street Portsmouth we take pride in our community and with community support and collaboration we can continue to have a healthy, energetic and prosperous downtown.
