United Healthcare recently donated two refurbished Hewlett Packard laptops to The Counseling Center, Inc. as part of their Community Computers program.

The laptops are located at the Futures program, part of The Counseling Center on Court where consolidated outpatient services have recently relocated, and The Clubhouse, located at 2102 Eleventh Street, Portsmouth. The new computers are available for use by clients to complete on-line applications and resume development, to establish e-mail accounts to follow up with job leads, and to explore other community resources and assistance as needed to help them in achieving employment and supporting their vocational goals.

According to Kelly Velazquez, Relationship Specialist for United Healthcare, “Our Community Computers program helps community and faith-based organizations establish their own on-site computer labs with used computers that we donate. It’s a win-win for everyone, because it helps us extend the useable life of our older computers, and puts them in the hands of people who can really use them.” The criteria for becoming a donation site is the site must serve the same populations that UHC serves. The computers have been refurbished and are intended to become ports of access for the public to find health information, search for employment, and apply for benefits and assistance programs.

Velazquez says, “As a new-comer to the county, I see all the good that you [TCC] do for the people of Scioto County. The programs you provide are a great resource to all. I have been doing this job for over seven years and your program is unique – I don’t see anything else like it in Southeast Ohio.”

Mindy Keaton, The Counseling Center’s Program Coordinator for Futures expressed her gratitude, “We cannot thank United Health Care enough for their generous contribution and thoughtfulness. It is the little gestures such as the one UHC has displayed to our program that motivates individuals to keep looking for employment and confirms that they are supported in their efforts.”
