In June Shawnee State University (SSU) announced a $1.2 million renovation project for Founder’s Plaza, the area between the administration building and Rhodes Athletic Center.

According to Butch Kotcamp, Director of Facilities, Planning and Construction for SSU, as of Tuesday afternoon the renovation is 90 percent complete.

“All of the concrete work is complete, the structure is complete. There is a piece of the canopy will most likely be in later this week and completed next week. The brick pavers on the graduation platform will be completed within the next two weeks,” Kotcamp said. “These projects are not weather sensitive so they can happen any time. What we are going to have left to do in the spring is landscaping.”

Kotcamp said the space now includes a renovated and expanded graduation platform, a fountain, a clock tower and a number of other amenities.

Kotcamp said reaction to the renovated space has been positive.

“We’ve received a lot of positive feedback. There has not been a lot of traffic going through the area, but we’ve had a lot of positive feedback,” Kotcamp said. “If you’ve ever on that platform in the last 15 years it’s a tremendous before and after,” Kotcamp said.

He said the top level of the plaza has been opened to foot traffic, but the bottom level is still closed off, waiting on some work to be finished.

Kotcamp said the fountain had to be drained because of the cold weather and the clock tower is still being worked on, but otherwise everything is functional.

Kotcamp said he anticipates the entire project to be wrapped up before SSU’s spring graduation.

Kotcamp said there were three contractors on the project, Portco, Inc., of Portsmouth as the General Contractor, JM Miller Enterprises of Lucasville as the Electrical Contractor and B.B. & E., Inc., of Portsmouth as the Plumbing Contractor.
