Longtime village of New Boston Councilman Mike Payton has taken out petitions with the Scioto County Board of Elections to run for Scioto County Commissioner.

“I like the direction we’re starting to head in the county. I’m a member of the (Southern Ohio) Port Authority and that whole scenario is starting to develop well. From an economic development state I have as much experience as anyone running,” Payton said. “New Boston has been moving forward, for quite a while now and I’ve been apart of that over the last six years, that I’ve been on council.”

Payton said, it was time for him and if elected he could be in a position where he could not only help New Boston but all of Scioto County.

“I think the county is moving forward and I want to be a bigger part of that,” Payton said.

Payton also praised the work of the Scioto County Health Coalition.

“The idea of bringing companies into Scioto county is good, but we have to make sure we have a county that’s healthy. We have such an asset with the coalition, we’re heading in the right direction with that as well,” Payton said. “I really like the idea to make us an economically developed area that’s attractive to businesses, we want this area to be somewhere in which people are not afraid to come and do business.”

Payton said he is currently circulating petitions, gathering the necessary signatures.

Earlier this year Scioto County Commissioner Skip Riffe announced he will not be seeking reelection, when his term is up at the end of the year.

According to the Scioto county Board of Elections others who have taken out petitions to run include, Don Hadsell, Don Rachford who has filed petitions, Gary Ray Mullins, Will Mault Mark Ward, Kent Madden and Payton.
