On March 6, the Southern Ohio Academic Competition Tournament took place at Shawnee State University. The Tournament was hosted by the South Central Ohio Educational Service Center and Shawnee State University. Moderators for the event were Marcia Tackett, Cathy Mullins, Dr. Darrell Rudmann, Tanner Salyers, Chuck Burke, Katy Mathuews, Morgan Garrett and Mark Rose.
Teams from Clay, East, Notre Dame, Portsmouth, Rock Hill, South Webster, Valley and Wheelersburg High Schools competed for the title of Division I Champions, while Scioto County CTC, Green, Minford, New Boston, Northwest, Oak Hill, Piketon and West High Schools competed for the title of Division II Champions. This was a double-elimination tournament with each school playing a minimum of two matches. Each round consists of questions in the following categories: American Literature, Mathematics, World History, Fine Arts, Life Sciences, World Literature, U.S. Government, Physical Sciences, Geography and U.S. History, as well as an “Alphabet Round” (where all answers begin with the same letter of the alphabet) and a Lightning Round which consists of questions from all categories.
The Wheelersburg High School team, coached by Brian Oakes, emerged as the Division I Champions. Clay High School, under the leadership of Cindy Parkes, took the Runner-up title.
The Division II Championship was won by Minford High School, led by Coach Brett Oakes. The Runner-up title went to Piketon High School and their coach, Olivia Day.
Wheelersburg and Minford High Schools will now advance to the Regional Competition to be held in Lancaster, Ohio.
