Two people were killed this morning in a two-vehicle, head-on collision at the intersection of U.S. Route 62 and Barger Road in Fayette County near the Highland County line.

At approximately 9:55 a.m., a 2007 Ford Fusion driven by Mary E. Harris, 65, of Greenfield, was traveling northwest on Barger Road toward the U.S. 62 intersection, according to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. The Ford Fusion entered the intersection and collided with a 2007 Chevrolet Colorado, which was traveling northeast on U.S. 62.

As a result of the collision, the Ford Fusion slid off the roadway and onto the property of Olive Vinyl Products, located at 11010 U.S. 62.

Harris and the passenger in the Ford Fusion, Carole S. Johnson, 53, of Greenfield, were pronounced dead at the scene by Fayette County Coroner Dr. Dennis Mesker.

The driver of the Chevrolet Colorado, Lucas A. Morris, 20, of Washington Court House, and a 1-year-old female passenger were transported by Leesburg EMS to Highland District Hospital for treatment of their injuries. The child was secured in a child safety seat at the time of the accident, authorities said.

According to the FCSO, their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

U.S. Route 62 remains closed from the Village of Leesburg to Jamison Road as members of the FCSO Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit continue to investigate.
