Thanks to the generosity and vision of Ron Lykins and his late wife, Ruth, and with contributions from other Jefferson Alumni members or their families, forty-seven graduating seniors have been awarded scholarships at the Jefferson Alumni since 2003. These include Jefferson Alumni Scholarships, Dr. James & Suzanne Branham Scholarship, and the Don & Flo Armstrong Memorial Scholarships. In 2014, ten additional deserving young people, who are direct descendants of a graduate of Jefferson High School, were given scholarships.
The two Jefferson Alumni Scholarships were awarded to Alexandra Mielke and Kore Newman.
Alexandra Mielke graduated from Dublin Scioto High School and is the daughter of Kyle & Kristi Mielke. Alex plans to attend Ohio University to major in Education and become an Intervention Specialist. She was a starter and captain on the high school basketball team and 2013 Homecoming Queen. She is a member of National Honor Society and Team Manager at Graeters and participated in a mission trip to Guatamala with Encounter Church. She attained a 4.147 GPA by taking rigorous classes including 4 Advanced Placement courses earning her valedictorian honors. She is the Granddaughter of Ron Lykins class of 1959.
Kore Newman a Manchester High School graduate is the son of Jeff & Lisa Newman. Kore plans to attend Cedarville University in Computer Sciences. He was a BETA Club and National Honor Society member and in band and choir. He has been active in 4-H and a member of the Junior Fair Board while also serving his church as a Junior Church Teacher and Youth Ministries Leader. Kore maintained a 4.00 GPA and earned Valedictorian honors. He is the Grandson of Carroll Newman class of 1960
The seven Don & Flo Armstrong Memorial Scholarships were awarded to Blake Bradley, Sydney Carter, Gabrielle Fish, Joshua Grooms, Emily McCarty, Haylee Pell and Chase Williams.
Blake Bradley a North Adams High School graduate is the son of Michelle Knauff Moore & Anthony Bradley. Blake plans to attend Southern State Community College in Electromechanical Engineering. He maintained a 3.31 GPA while playing basketball, baseball and golf and was also active in FFA and 4-H. Blake is the Grandson of Carol Hayslip Knauff class of 1971.
Sydney Carter a graduate of Clay High School is the daughter of Matt Carter & Kelli Gray Conkel. Sydney plans to attend University of South Dakota Vermillion for a BS in Nursing. She has maintained a GPA of 3.03 while playing softball, basketball and volleyball. She was a volunteer for Salvation Army, Senior Olympics and participated in the school blood drive. Sydney is the Great-Granddaughter of the late Janell Schmidt Pennington class of 1946.
Gabrielle Fish a North Adams High School graduate is valedictorian and is the daughter of Scott & Tammy Fish. Gabby plans to attend the University of Cincinnati in Pre-Pharmacy. She was a BETA and National Honor Society member, a cheerleader and member of the golf team. She has assisted pee wee cheerleaders and was on the blood drive committee. She maintained a 3.95 GPA. Gabby is the Granddaughter of Fern Stepp Mathews class of 1966 and the Great-granddaughter of the late Thomas Stepp class of 1938.
Joshua Grooms graduated from West Union High School and is the son of Jeremy & Sherri Grooms. Josh plans to attend Berea College for a BS in Applied Math & Science and then pursue a masters degree in meteorology. Josh ran track and cross country and was in band. He was in the National Honor Society and participated for 2 years in the Shawnee State Upward Bound Math and Science program. He had a 4.00 GPA and was valedictorian. Josh is the Grandson of Donald Grooms, Jr. class of 1964.
Emily McCarty is a West Union High School graduate and the daughter of Richard & Sandy McCarty. Emily plans to attend Shawnee State University in Business Administration. She was in BETA and National Honor Society. She was a 4-year golf team and varsity volleyball team member and made All League and District 14. She earned 4.00 GPA and was valedictorian. Emily is the Granddaughter of Ray McCarty class of 1963 and Harriet Caraway DeMint class of 1968 and the Great-granddaughter of the late Harry Caraway class of 1931.
Haylee Pell graduated from West Union High School and is the daughter of Mike & Monica Pell. She plans to attend Morehead State University in Business Administration. She was in BETA and National Honor Society, a cheerleader and on the golf team for 3 years. She maintained a 3.97 GPA. Haylee is the Granddaughter of Kimmy Rogers class of 1970 and Great-Granddaughter of Luther Rogers class of 1948.
Chase Williams a Peebles High School graduate is the son of Becky & Kelly Williams and plans to attend Shawnee State University to major in Digital Simulation & Gaming Engineering Technology. He was a member of BETA and the National Honor Society. He maintained a 3.65 GPA. He is in Boy Scouts and is an Eagle Scout. Chase is the grandson of Anna Mae Hodge McFarland class of 1956.
The Dr. James & Suzanne Branham Scholarship funded by Ron Lykins in memory of Coach Branham and in honor of Susie May Branham was awarded to Amber Brown.
Amber Brown graduate of Peebles High School is the daughter of Kevin Brown & Becky Setty. Amber plans to attend Southern State Community College for a degree in Nursing. She was a member of the Academic Team and FFA and was Secretary of Student Council. She volunteered for the American Cancer Society and maintained a 3.40 GPA. Amber is the Granddaughter of Steve Brown class of 1972 and the Great Granddaughter of the late Charles Ray Martin class of 1951.
