Compass Community Health is currently seeking bids for an expansion of its health care center located at 1634 11th street in Portsmouth. The project is expected to enhance the look of the center and will cost an estimated $90,000.
“This project is a good thing because it gives us an opportunity to expand and be available to people who need access to good quality healthcare,” said Sonie Hash, Program Director, Compass Community Health Care Center. “Part of the expansion that’s taking place is we’re knocking down some walls, providing better access and enhancing the look of the clinic, because it’s taken a beating over the last five years.”
She said the location used to house part of The Counseling Center’s out patient services and they have since moved to a different location, providing space for the expansion.
According to Michael Ralstin, Director of Facilities, Compass Community Health the scope of the project includes expanding the waiting room, reception area of the center.
“We are also adding a little more space for nurses and physicians to have room to work. Primarily it’s (the project) to create greater access for the community,” Ralstin said. “The project is (currently) out to bid and we have pre-bid meeting at 10 a.m. on July 16. There will be a public bid opening for this project on Friday.”
When asked if this project was part of a master facilities plan, Ralstin said, “we certainly hope to expand in the future even further. But, right now this is extent of the expansion.”
He said once a contract is awarded and construction begins, the project is expected to take 60 days to complete.
The center will remain open throughout the process.
Part of the funding for the expansion came through a grant from Appalachian Regional Commission Grant.
