The 8th annual House Hold Hazardous Waste event is set to take place on Saturday September 28th from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
“This is a program the district can provide the residents of both counties free. You tell me where else your going to get a free program that will do all of this,” said Dan Palmer, Director of the Lawrence-Scioto County Solid Waste Management District. “We all are guilty of accumulating stuff in our basement, our garages and everyplace. Before long you realize how much you have, and then it’s a question of how to dispose it.”
Items that will be accepted at the Household Hazardous Waste event include, scrap tires, off the rim, with a limit of 10 per person. Lead acid batteries, motor oil, used antifreeze, paints, thinners, solvents, cleaners, pesticides, pool chemicals, electronics, computers and pharmaceuticals.
Items not accepted include, explosives, ammunition, trash, needles/syringes, yard waste, fuel tanks, appliances and televisions.
Palmer said the district has already been receiving numerous calls about the event.
According to promotional material, “every household generated hazardous waste, such as chemicals, cleaners, pesticides, solvents, etc. Individual amounts may not see large, but collectively, these amounts are significant. Recycling and disposing of these wastes are a problem for many and that is why the Lawrence-Scioto County SWMD (solid waste management district) is affording Lawrence and Scioto County residents the opportunity to dispose of your hazardous waste through our HHW.”
The 2012 HHW saw, 222 vehicles. A total of 39 batteries were collected along with 986 tires, 24,000 pounds of latex paint, 1,000 pounds of toxic solids and liquids, 150 pounds of alkaline batteries and 48 pounds of fluorescent bulbs along with many other items.
