For the third consecutive year, Southern Ohio Medical Center is preparing to “Paint It Pink” for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

On October 18, SOMC is encouraging the community to wear “Paint It Pink” t-shirts, as well as decorate their homes, schools, or businesses pink. The event will continue on October 19 with the Ceremonial Pink Parade, a “Paint It Pink” Zumbathon and a “Paint It Pink” 5k Run/Walk.

The goal is to facilitate a discussion about the disease, as well as to elevate mammography-screening rates.

“Most people are aware of the disease yet many do not plan to take steps to detect the disease in the early stages,” Cancer Center Director Wendi Waugh said. “Diagnosing breast cancer at an early stage decreases the hardships of treatment and increases the chance of cure. So most importantly in the midst of all the pink remind your loved ones to get an annual mammogram.”

The American Cancer Society recommends that every woman should have an annual mammogram beginning at age 40 and continuing every year as long as a woman is in good health. A clinical breast exam should be done about every 3 years for women in their 20s and 30s and every year for women 40 and over. Some women because of family history or other factors many need to begin mammography screening earlier.

SOMC will also be hosting free breast cancer screenings at the Cancer Center on October 8 from 4-6 p.m.

The events are about more than just wearing a certain color, however. All proceeds support the SOMC Cancer Compassion Fund, which has a tangible impact on the lives of local cancer patients.

“We’re not just making a statement, we’re making a difference,” Waugh said. “This all benefits the Cancer Compassion Fund, which assists local cancer patients with everything from medical bills and medications to transportation and wigs.”

Starting October 1, “Paint It Pink” t-shirts can be purchased in the SOMC Gift Gallery on the hospitals main campus as well as in the SOMC Cancer Center’s Gift of Hope Boutique.
