The Lupus Foundation of America, Greater Ohio Chapter is set to host its first Portsmouth Lupus Summit on Oct. 12 at the Portsmouth Public Library.

According to the Lupus Foundation of America, Greater Ohio Chapter, “more people have lupus than AIDS, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, sickle-cell anemia, and cystic fibrosis combined. However, a recent study by the Lupus Foundation of America found awareness and understanding of the disease are extremely low. In an effort to spread awareness and offer education and support to individuals with lupus and their support systems, the LFA, GOC will host its first summit in Southeastern Ohio.”

Bernie Adkins, a local advocate said, “most people don’t know what Lupus is and we want to change that. We want to provide support for people so they don’t feel like they are fighting this battle alone. We want to educate people on how to take better care of themselves, educate their families and loved one so they can better understand this disease.”

According to Caitrin Cardosi, Marketing Coordinator at the LFA, GOC and a Portsmouth native. the southeastern Ohio lupus community is hungry for education and services.

According to submitted material for the event, registration begins at 10:30a.m., with the program will begin at 11a.m.
