Applications are now being accepted for the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) scholarship offered by Fluor-B&W Portsmouth LLC. This one-time $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to 12 high school seniors.
The STEM scholarship is open to 2014 graduating seniors attending a public or private high school in Jackson, Pike, Ross or Scioto counties. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or greater and have been accepted to attend an accredited college or university with a major in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics.
The students will need to compose an essay of no more than 1,000 words, include two letters of recommendation, an official transcript and complete an application. The applications will be available through high school guidance counselors. The deadline for completed applications is March 21, 2014.
During April, a team of judges will review the applications. The scholarship winners will be announced the first week of May.
Fluor-B&W Portsmouth is the Department of Energy’s contractor for cleanup of Cold War-era uranium enrichment facilities at the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon. The organization is committed to being an active corporate leader to the communities that have supported nuclear and environmental remediation missions at the DOE Portsmouth site for more than 50 years.
