The Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District in cooperation with Portsmouth Municipal Court and others are set to host the Second Annual Portsmouth Citywide Cleanup Day Saturday, June 7.

“Residents of the City of Portsmouth may bring items for disposal to the large dumpsters to be located behind the Portsmouth Municipal Court (728 2nd Street, Portsmouth) and Allard Park (Football Lot) in Sciotoville,” said Steve Mowery, Portsmouth Municipal Court Judge in a released statement. “Community service workers and other volunteers will be located at the drop off points to assist persons in emptying and disposing of their refuse.”

Mowery said those who drop off items to be disposed of will need to provide proof of residency. The cleanup is restricted to residents of Portsmouth.

Items that will not be accepted at the event include paint, chemicals and hazardous materials.

“In addition to the ability of Portsmouth residents to dispose of items at the Portsmouth and Sciotoville locations, the Portsmouth Municipal Court will provide community service workers who will join with other city employees and other volunteers to pick up debris and garbage in the streets and alleys of Portsmouth,” Mowery said.

When asked why events like this are important to the community, Mowery said, “we’re going to get some community involvement to cleanup the city and let people in the community bring items in. We done this last year and a lot of people we’re receptive to that opportunity.”

Mowery said this event is a good way for residents to give back, by properly disposing of refuse and also a good way to pay it forward.

“This is also a way for residents to be aware of the amount of litter that’s in the community,” Mowery said. “This also raises awareness of the clean city we all want to live in and the environment we want to be in.”

Bob Gilley was organizing the event, but passed away unexpectedly recently.

Mowery said the staff had a meeting and decided to proceed, “because Bobby worked so hard on making this happen and getting it ready. He passed away unexpectedly and we want to complete the job for him.”

The event will run from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. and for more information call Portsmouth Municipal Court at 740-353-7367.
