The Clay School Legacy Scholarship Fund awarded a record twenty (20) $1,000 scholarships to members of the Clay Class of 2014 at the Clay Graduation Exercises held recently. Charles T. Leonard, President of the Clay Alumni Association, stated he is very pleased with the financial support received from community businesses, Clay Alumni Members and friends of Clay Schools. The Clay School Legacy Scholarship Fund is a joint venture between Clay Schools and the Clay Alumni Association. Leonard said this accomplishment is truly a team effort, and extends his sincere gratitude to all who participated. Leonard further stated he knows of no other alumni association and school, in the state of Ohio, who together give as many scholarships as the Clay School Legacy Scholarship Fund.


Listed below are the names of the scholarship recipients, the sponsors of the scholarships and a brief biographic on each recipient:


Ethan Nelson is the recipient of the Doris Holt McCain Scholarship given in memory of her husband George Alfred McCain, Clay Class of 1944 and her son Terence Allen McCain, Clay Class of 1966. Ethan is the son of Joe and Garnet Nelson. Ethan will attend Ohio University to study Civil Engineering.


Mark Shaffer is the recipient of the James R. Goad, Clay Class of 1966 Scholarship sponsored by James’ brother David Goad and wife Kimberly, James’ daughter Carissa McConkey and husband Jerome. Mark is the son of William and Elizabeth Shaffer. Mark will attend Xavier University to study Criminology.


Annie Hopkins is the recipient of the Jane Ann (Thomas) Hiatt Memorial Scholarship sponsored by an anonymous donor. Annie is the daughter of David and Gayle Hopkins. Annie will attend Alderson-Broaddus University. Annie will pursue a degree either as an Athletic Trainer or she will study Biology or Chemistry.


Emily Widdowson is the recipient of the scholarship sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Hunt in memory of Ms. Marianne Hunt Rose and Mr. Craig Rose, both of the Clay Class of 1958 and Mr. and Mrs. Harry D. Hunt. Emily is the daughter of Charles and Amy Widdowson. Emily will attend Morehead State University to study Nursing.


Shannon Curley is the recipient of the scholarship sponsored by Phyllis Cox Johnson, Clay Class of 1960, in memory of the deceased members of the Clay Class of 1960. Shannon is the daughter of Nate and Susan Curley. Shannon will attend the University of Rio Grande to study Nursing.


Jessica Ann Moore is the recipient of the Michael W. Powell, Clay Class of 1965, Memorial Scholarship sponsored by his father, Bill Powell, wife, Linda Powell and daughters, Cindy Powell Gearheart and Mindy Powell Keaton and friends. Jessica Ann Moore is the daughter of Brian and Kitty Moore. Jessica Ann will attend Shawnee State University to study Nursing.


Michael Schmidt is the recipient of the Karen Gilliland Memorial Scholarship sponsored in memory of Howard and Mary Ann Gilliland. Michael is the son of Daniel and Sharon Schmidt. Michael will attend Wright State University to study Engineering.


Chastity Allen is the recipient of the scholarship sponsored by the Southern Ohio Medical Center. Chastity is the daughter of Don Allen and Kaye Colley. Chastity will either attend Shawnee State University, or Scioto County Career Technical Center, to study Nursing.


Heather Mynes is the recipient of the Mary L. Gerdts Scholarship given in honor of Donna and David Leonard. Heather is the daughter of Tim and Janine Mynes. Heather will attend Liberty University to study Pre-Law.


Mary Shelby is the recipient of The Clay Class of 1956 Memorial Scholarship, given in memory of the deceased members of the Clay Class of 1956. Mary is the daughter of Scott and LuAnn Shelby. Mary will attend Shawnee State University to study Nursing.


Robert Madden is the recipient of The Clay Class of 1966 Memorial Scholarship, given in memory of the deceased members of the Clay Class of 1966. Robert is the son of Danny and Lisa Madden. Robert will attend Shawnee State University to study Computer Engineering.


Hailey Hinch is the recipient of the scholarship sponsored by the Clay Class of 1962 in memory of the deceased members of the Clay Class of 1962. Haley is the daughter of Jessica Fitzer. Hailey will attend Shawnee State University. Hailey is undecided on her major course of study.


Sarah Redding is the recipient of the scholarship sponsored by the Clay School Legacy Scholarship Fund given in memory of David Ray Richard, who served as longtime Treasurer of the Clay Alumni Association. Sarah is the daughter of John and Jane Redding. Sarah will attend Kentucky Christian University to study Nursing.


Alex Napper is the recipient of the scholarship sponsored by Scheryl Reeder, Douglas and Mary Suhr, family and friends of Fred Reeder, given in memory of Fred Reeder, who served as longtime Vice-President of the Clay Alumni Association. Alex is the son of Andrew and Jennifer Napper. Alex will attend the University of Cincinnati to study Chemical Engineering.


Mason Pelphrey is the recipient of a scholarship sponsored by the Clay School Legacy Scholarship Fund. Mason is the son of Randy Pelphrey and Cindy Wireman. Mason will attend Trine University to study Mechanical Engineering.


Eldin Sarajlic is the recipient of a scholarship sponsored by the Clay School Legacy Scholarship Fund. Eldin is the son of Saro and Gina Sarajlic. Eldin will attend Wright State University to study Mechanical Engineering.


Madeline Burton is the recipient of a scholarship sponsored by the Clay School Legacy Scholarship Fund. Madeline is the daughter of Donald Burton and Lori Wolfe. Madeline will attend Ohio University to study Wildlife Biology.


Sydney Carter is the recipient of a scholarship sponsored by the Clay School Legacy Scholarship Fund. Sydney is the daughter of Matt Carter and Kelli Conkel. Sydney will attend the University of South Dakota to study Nursing.


Madison Freeman is the recipient of a scholarship sponsored by the Clay School Legacy Scholarship Fund. Madison is the daughter of Matthew and Donna Freeman. Madison will attend Ohio University to study Psychology.


Jerusha Durham is the recipient of a scholarship sponsored by the Clay School Legacy Scholarship Fund. Jerusha is the daughter of Bill Durham and Regina Kearchner. Jerusha will attend Paramount Beauty Academy to study Cosmetology.
