The first day of school is just around the corner. For parents, this means a sprint to the finish line for savings on everything from pens and paper to computers and rental trucks.

The National Retail Federation says the average family of kids in K-12 will spend about $669 per child while parents of college students will spend about $916, up about three percent from 2013. The list of what’s needed for school gets longer every year too. The National School Supply Lists Directory says school children need an average of 18 back to school items, up 29% from last year.

“Getting ready for the new school year can really put a strain on household budgets,” said Dan Flynn, Discounts and Rewards program manager for AAA East Central. “The AAA Discounts and Rewards program can help families get the most value out of their back-to-school purchases.”
