Members of Ms. Stewart’s fourth grade class and members of the Otway Historical Society.
When Ms. Stewart’s fourth grade homeroom class at Bloom Vernon Elementary learned about the Otway bridge, they never dreamed they were going to be a part of history. Ms. Stewart suggested that her class bring in their spare change and encouraged them to write letters to the Otway Historical Society. When the Otway Historical Society received their letters and donation it was decided that something needed to be done to show the Society’s appreciation. Marsha Phillips and Linda Richard of the Otway Historical Society, along with county engineer Craig Opperman and his assistant Debbie Lang paid a surprise visit to the class on Monday, November 19, 2012. Craig Opperman explained how the bridge was built using local resources. He then explained what areas of the bridge needed to be replaced or strengthened to return the bridge to a thoroughfare for small automobiles. The class was very interested and asked many questions. Various means of funding were discussed. The importance of personal donations plays a big part of the fundraising process in restoration of historical landmarks. The Otway Historical Society presented Ms. Stewart and her class with a framed picture of the bridge to hang in their classroom. Other handouts were distributed. The next fundraiser for the bridge is an All- You-Can-Eat Spaghetti Dinner December 9, 2012 at the Otway school gym from noon to 5 p.m. All-You-Can-Eat $7, Adults $6, Seniors $4, Children 6 and under $3. Includes drink, dessert is extra.
