Congresswoman Jean Schmidt (OH-02) has been named Chairwoman of the House Agriculture Subcommittee on Nutrition and Horticulture for the 112th Congress.
The subcommittee will have jurisdiction over food stamps, nutrition and consumer programs, fruits and vegetables, honey and bees, marketing and promotion orders, plant pesticides, quarantine, adulteration of seeds and insect pests, and organic agriculture.
I am honored and excited by the opportunity to chair this important subcommittee, said Congresswoman Schmidt. I care deeply about the issues this subcommittee will oversee, especially nutrition, and helping the agriculture industry and our family farms remain competitive.
House Agriculture Committee Chairman-elect Frank Lewis (R-OK) said of Congresswoman Schmidts appointment, "Representative Schmidt is astrongadvocate for agriculture and nutrition issues.I look forward to working with her in this new leadership role as we move forward to ensure proper oversight of the administration and ensure the health and vitality of production agriculture and rural economies."
During the 112th Congress the Agriculture Committee will begin work on a new farm bill and provide valuable oversight over important issues related to nutrition, administration of the food stamp program. Congresswoman Schmidt will focus her attention on developing nutrition policy and holding the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) accountable for its policies.
The next Congress has many challenges ahead, reducing the national debt, eliminating barriers to job growth and promoting policies to help our farmers and ranchers. I look forward to working with Chairman Lucas and my colleagues to accomplish this mission, Schmidt added.
