The Hike for Hospice is a non-competitive 5-K “Fun Walk” will begin at the Hospice Center on 25th St. in Portsmouth. With registration starting at 8:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 9:30 a.m.
"Our program serves people in our community regardless of their ability to pay. The money generated from events like these goes into a fund to help cover the needs of patients and families," Teresa Ruby, director of SOMC Hospice said. "This fund covers things that might not be covered by insurance or they (patient) may not have insurance at all. Though this fund we have been able to purchase things like dippers and other items that would other wise put a burden on folks. We also do special requests such as birthday celebrations, anniversary celebrations; we've had weddings and other various events."
As a part of the hike participants of the hike are asked to raise funds by asking friends to sponsor an amount per kilometer walked or giving an outright donation.
Participants also can join in groups of three or more to form teams. Teams may display their spirit by creating team banners, pennants, shirts or anything that promotes their team. Each team receives one complimentary 8x10 photo.
Hikers and supporters are eligible for prizes and T-shirts will be available for purchase. Awards are presented at the end of the hike to teams as well as individuals in various categories. Rest stops are available along the way.
Ruby said in the past the hike has raised more than $30,000, with anywhere from 400-500 people participating.
After the race participants are treated to a free lunch is provided by Subway Sandwiches & Salads, Life Ambulance, ABLE Ambulance, OSCO and Southern Ohio Medical Center.
