Business scholarship established at the Shawnee State University
by Pamela K. Matura, Executive Director, Area Agency on Aging District 7
The Robert and Jean Kramer Business Scholarship endowment was established recently through an estate gift for the College of Professional Studies.
The Kramers both graduated from Portsmouth High School and were married in 1941, just before WWII broke out. Robert went into the Navy and served in the Pacific and the Aleutian Islands, returning to Portsmouth after four years and here he settled with his bride.
He was a lifelong learner and while he worked at Time Loan, he pursued his education at Ohio University Portsmouth Branch. After receiving his associate’s degree, Robert got a job at Goodyear Atomic Energy Plant and worked there until his retirement. In the meantime, he continued going to college and got his bachelor’s degree when he was in his 50s. Robert was an active member of the Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite. Both Robert and Jean were members of First Lutheran Church.
Jean was a homemaker and stay-at-home mom to two daughters until she was 40 when she began working for Household Finance where she retired in 1976. They traveled extensively and celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary in August 2010. Robert passed away in December of that year. Jean soon will be 91 years old and lives in New Jersey in an assisted living facility near her daughter Lynn King. Her daughter, Kaye Osborne, lives in Portsmouth.
“From the time my sister and I were tiny, it was drilled into us that we must go to college and get a degree. I graduated from Ohio University with a B.S. in education and my sister graduated two years later from OU with a bachelor’s degree in fashion merchandising,” King said. “It was my father’s wish that this scholarship be set up so that others might better afford a good education.”
Full-time students who meet the scholarship criteria and remain in good standing will be given preference for the award for up to four years of study toward a bachelor’s degree.
This scholarship endowment is administered by the SSU Development Foundation. Individuals or organizations interested in establishing a scholarship can contact the SSU Development Foundation at (740) 351-3284 or learn more at http://giveto.shawnee.edu.
