It was announced Thursday that Vice President Joe Biden will appear at Portsmouth High School on Sunday, with doors opening at 9:30 a.m. and speaking at 11:45 a.m.

Biden will be accompanied on Sunday by Scioto County native and former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland.

The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis and can be obtained at the Obama For America Portsmouth office, 1018 Chillicothe Street Portsmouth, Obama For America Ironton office, 1520 South 11th St., Ironton, and the Obama For America Chillicothe office at 149 W. Water Street Chillicothe. Tickets can be picked up today from from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“You’ve got to come in to the Democrat Headquarters and get the tickets. I think two is the max they’ll let any one person have at a time, and they’re free. It’s a ticketed only event,” said Scioto County Democratic Party Chairman, Randy Basham.

According to information from the Obama campaign, participants of the event can expect to go through airport-like security and should bring as few personal items as possible. Participants will not allowed to bring bags, sharp objects, umbrellas, liquids, or signs inside.

Vice President Biden will make a two-day swing through Ohio which will include stops in suburban Cincinnati, Zanesville, Athens and Portsmouth.

According to the campaign information, “The Vice President will discuss the choice in this election between two fundamentally different visions on how to create an economy built to last. The Vice President will lay out what’s at stake for the middle class in this election – the choice between continuing to move forward to an economy built to last that’s grounded in a strong middle class, or going back to the same ‘top-down’ economic policies of the last decade that crashed our economy and punished the middle class.”

Basham said it is always exciting to have a major candidate visit the area, and that it is a sitting vice president is even more exciting. The last sitting vice president to visit Portsmouth was Dan Quayle in 1992.

“Because of 60 days less to go, or whatever it is, they’re trying to cover a lot of territory in Virginia and Ohio and those key swing states. So Obama is really pounding on those counties that he won four years ago, and Joe Biden is a blue-collar man and he and Strickland are working the old Strickland servicing area from representative to governor,” Basham said.

During the event cameras are permitted.

Parking will be available at the school but will be limited. Participants are asked to enter the high school, using the entrance on Waller Street across from the football field.

Before On Friday at 6 p.m. Obama For America Ohio’s “Heartland Tour 2012: Moving the Middle Class Forward”, RV tour will make a stop at the Scioto County Democratic Headquarters on Friday, Sept. 7th at 6 p.m. Greg Shultz, Obama For America State Director will be in attendance along with others, according to released information “highlighting the stark contrast between President Obama and Mitt Romney on the issues that matter to Ohio’s rural communities.”
