The Master of Occupational Therapy at Shawnee State University prepares graduates to receive an entry-level master’s degree. The curriculum consists of 77 credit hours and is completed in 2.5 years. It is SSU’s mission to facilitate students to become independent, life-long learners while teaching students the fundamental skills of thinking critically, acting ethically and communicating effectively.

By accomplishing these goals, students will develop themselves as confident occupational therapy professionals who are change agents for the profession and their communities who value occupation-centered evidence-based practice. Further, it is the mission of the program to contribute to the community through continuing education, community service and enrichment of the work force.

SSU curriculum requires fieldwork (working with clients and facilities) from the first semester to the last. It also requires research involvement – each student is required to complete a group research project from the first semester to the last.

Students receive individual attention in the small classes (20-24) at SSU and quickly become integrated into the mix of faculty/student ratio. Four of the faculty holds Ph.D. degrees, and one is an OTR/LMS specialist in pediatric sensory integration. The plan for selecting and sequencing the program content is based on Knowles’ adult learning theory and Dewey’s inquiry-based learning.

Dewey’s four points of inquiry, communication, conversation, construction and artistic expression, provide the curriculum framework for developing lifelong learners. The application deadline is December 15.
