Ware Eagle Scout Scholarship Application Deadline Approaching
The deadline for the 2013 Samuel Wilson Ware Eagle Scholarship is approaching. Established in 2008 by the estate of the late Samuel Wilson Ware, the scholarship is available to all Eagle Scouts who are a high school graduate or graduating senior and resident of Scioto County, Ohio when attaining the Eagle rank. The general scholarship, established in 2008 by the estate of the late Samuel Wilson Ware provides assistance for students attending any college/university that is accredited by recognized accreditation agencies and offers a bachelor’s degree or associates degree upon completion of the course of study offered. “Mr. Ware left a legacy to benefit the Eagle Scouts in his community with the hopes of encouraging them to continue their education and their involvement and leadership in the Scouting program”, explained Josh Howard, a member of the scholarship committee. During its short four year history, the Scholarship fund has awarded nineteen scholarships totaling $30,000.00 to Eagle Scouts in Scioto County.
A 1943 graduate of Portsmouth High School, Ware attained the rank of Eagle Scout in 1941. He accredited this achievement to his future success in life and the scholarship in his memory is a means of giving back what was given to him through the Boy Scout program.
Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the HYPERLINK “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boy_Scouting_(Boy_Scouts_of_America)” \o “Boy Scouting (Boy Scouts of America)” Boy Scout program. Those who attain this rank are called an Eagle Scout or Eagle. The title of Eagle Scout is held for life, thus giving rise to the phrase “Once an Eagle, always an Eagle”. The fact that a boy is an Eagle Scout has always carried with it a special significance, not only in Scouting but also as he enters higher education, business or industry, and community service. The award is a performance based achievement whose standards have been well-maintained over the years. Requirements include earning at least 21 HYPERLINK “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merit_badge_(Boy_Scouts_of_America)” \o “Merit badge (Boy Scouts of America)” merit badges and demonstrating HYPERLINK “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scout_Spirit” \o “Scout Spirit” Scout Spirit, service, and leadership. This includes an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads, and manages. Not every boy who joins a Boy Scout troop earns the Eagle Scout rank; only about 5 percent of all Boy Scouts do so. More than two million Boy Scouts have earned the rank since 1912. Nevertheless, the goals of Scouting—citizenship training, character development, and personal fitness—remain important for all Scouts, whether or not they attain the Eagle Scout rank.
The Samuel Wilson Ware Scholarship offers scholarships annually which vary in size and are based on the Eagle Scout’s community and unit involvement, leadership abilities, financial need and academic achievement. Previous recipients are eligible and encouraged to apply for the scholarship multiple times. Applications must be postmarked no later than midnight on February 22, 2013. Scholarship applications are available at the local Simon Kenton Council Service Center located at 318 Chillicothe Street, Portsmouth, from local Scout troops or online at http://www.skcbsa.org/documents/Tecumseh/Ware_Scholarship_Form_Fillable_2013.pdf
