By successfully spelling papoose and cardiac Nate Marcum of Wheelersburg Middle School won the 62nd Civic Forum spelling bee held at the SOMC Friends Center on the evening of March 2. The event started at 7pm with twenty-eight contestants and did not end until 9 pm when the four finalists were 1st Nate Marcum, 2nd Doug Bryant of Minford Middle School, 3rd Luke Bradley of Bloom Vernon Elem and 4th Brianna Arnett of Minford Middle School.

Gene Arms of the Civic Forum and chairman of the bee, thanked SOMC for again sponsoring the event. “Civic Forum has been holding the bee for 62 years, and it is a great educational event for the young people of our area.” Arms continued, “I want to thank all of our other sponsors that provided prizes and trophies for our contestants: Desco, American Savings Bank, Scioto Ribber, Bihl’s Office Supply, Berndt & Murfin Insurance, Morgan Brothers Jewelers, Lute Supply, Kyle Signs, Pepsi and Walmart.”

This is second year in a row that Nate has captured the crown as Champion Speller of the Year.
