The Horizon House located on Second Street in Portsmouth has received a $1.5 million historic preservation tax credit through the Ohio Department of Development. The tax credit comes on the announcement that the Horizon House will be undergoing a $7 million dollar renovation in the spring.
"This is a very important building to the Boneyfiddle Historic District. Historic buildings are very important to having a since of place," Lisa Patt-McDaniel Director of the Ohio Department of Development said.
"Living in Scioto County all of my life I've seen us passed over many many times for funding for a number of things. It's a wonderful thing to see from time to time Scioto County get their fair share of something. This is a start, we need to keep looking for more and more ways improve our community. It warms my heart that someone has not forgotten us again," Mike Crabtree Scioto County Commissioner said.
The Ohio Capital Corporation For Housing owns the building and has been looking to renovate it for a number of years. Earlier in the year the project was awarded tax credits from the Ohio Housing Finance Agency.
"For the past three and a half to four years we have been working on this project. This (awarding of the tax credits) really gets us there," Brian Langmeyer, Vice President of Development for the Ohio Capital Corporation For Housing said. "We are going to start construction in April in order to get things rolling. The building is 30 years old, and we want to get it back up where it needs to be. I hope the seniors who live here, enjoy living here. If you (residents) like it now in about a year and three months you are really going to love it."
